I believe art is for everyone and everyone is an artist. Theater brings all aspects of art together. Producing a show of any size requires planning, vision, and cooperation. It forces ideas out of the imaginary and into the actual. Production requires skills ranging from carpentry to electronics as well as color, composition, and style choices. Add history, sociology, annotation, and analysis and you have a vehicle for comprehensive education. Theater does all of this for young people and provides a safe place for expression and exploration without fear of judgement. I strive to give that to my students, to be the person I needed as a kid. And I want to be sure other adults have the tools to create great experiences for their students as well.
At its core, great theater is simple. It engages the audience by wrapping them up in a well told story. For adults who work in theater production, that means every element that an audience can see, hear, and feel must support that story. If we do it well, it is as seamless as the flow of dialogue. Theater technicians are artists and storytellers who use their specific crafts to support the story being told on stage. As we build a show, we work together, problem solve, and create the world of the play, together. What powerful tools to reach young people.! Fully developed theater programs build better students. Better students build better futures for themselves and others.
